Do the health consequences of sugar and alcohol consumption compare?

So many people refrain from alcohol for many reasons from health to religious beliefs but not too many would give a second thought about consuming sugar.  It was quite eye-opening for me to realize that the health consequences are almost identical and we forget that alcohol is fermented sugar!
